Why a former IRS commissioner says Musk's mass layoffs are a 'huge mistake'

At a time when the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is taking a chainsaw to various government agencies, one agency in the crosshairs of cuts is having the opposite effect on the U.S. government.

Former Commissioner Daniel Werfel spoke with PBS Newshour and described the concerns echoed by every former Internal Revenue Service Commissioner in a recent New York Times OpEd.

This is not a political issue. If the exercise being undertaken by the federal government is to find cost efficiency, then you can't just cut costs, you must preserve and increase revenue. Depleting the ability of the U.S. government to collect revenue makes the government less cost-efficient.

Cuts are said to be focused on enforcement - those collecting overdue taxes owed to the government. The consequences of these moves will be immediate and will draw from the revenue coming into the United States.

While we all agree that there is an opportunity to modernize and find efficiencies at the IRS, cutting employees in the way they have only delayed that modernization and cut revenues to the country immediately.
